The Secret Power You Aren’t Aware Of.
Have you ever wondered why some days you’re able to perform exceptionally well? You feel on fire, switched on, and as if you could conquer any task. While on other days, you take longer to get going, tasks seem monotonous, and you just wanna stop or take a break?
Let me take you back to when I was in high school.
I remember before every test (whether it was English, Science, History, or any subject), I would always complete a small math problem set. I even remember minutes before being called in for my English GCSE exam, everybody around me was stuck memorizing quotes from books and reading flashcards to their friends, while I was sitting there completing a math problem set. My friends thought I was crazy, and in all fairness so did I.
Until recently, it became clear to me EXACTLY what I was doing.
I was taking advantage of a force that allows us to get into a flow state AND stay in that flow state for a sustained period.
It’s that force that enables you to feel on FIRE and as if you could conquer ANYTHING.
What is this force?
It is the one and only: MOMENTUM.
No, I’m not taking you back to high school science class and giving you a lecture on mechanics. But, I will use the scientific definition of momentum.
Momentum is normally defined as the TENDENCY of an object in motion to continue in motion.
But, what does this actually mean? And, what does it have to do with productivity or me completing a math problem set?
Well, let’s twist the definition of momentum into productivity: momentum is the tendency of somebody in a flow state to continue in a flow state.
In my world of problem sets, momentum is the tendency of me solving problems to continue solving problems.
So, I was strategically building momentum while going through each math problem, so that when I sat in my English test, I would be in the flow of already solving problems and able to slide straight into the test.
Overall, momentum is that force that makes sliding into work easier.
The best part is that momentum applies to EVERY aspect of your life.
Work momentum makes tasks easier to start and FINISH.
Social momentum makes conversations easier to start and MAINTAIN.
Exercise momentum makes workouts easier to start and CONTINUE.
And so on…..
So, how can you use this concept to 10X your productivity, improve the quality of your conversations, and have better workouts?
For productivity, take a moment and think about the top 3 tasks that really gauge your focus and take 10–20 minutes or less to complete. For me, that would be completing a math problem, doing a brain dump, or writing a draft of a LinkedIn post. This really gets me into a FLOW state.
For conversations, try calling somebody that you’re very close to and can strike up a random conversation in an instant (your partner, your mother, or your best friend) just before you have a job interview or a coffee meetup. This activates the Amygdala part of your brain that will prime it for any social situation.
For workouts, try the famous “warm up.” I start with a short run and some light reps. By then, I’m ready to go.
If you take 10–20 minutes at the start of each activity to build momentum, I guarantee your output will completely 10X.
